This was scouted by Rob for his recent ride. A large bit in the middle of the
run was, until recently, very poor quality gravel & a ride for desperados
(or off roaders) only. Happily, the bad gravel has been replaced with a new
sealed road and it's now a very scenic ride.
The mountain section is narrow in parts, quite steep, very winding and tight
and has no advisary signs or guard railing. Take it very easy and you can enjoy
the excellent scenery. If you want go-fast and cornering thrills, I'd go elsewhere.
In the lower sections there are a number of floodway crossings. I'm told these
get slippery if there has been some flow.
There's a choice of two cafes at the top - Spring Creek Mountain Cafe at the
edge of the range and Queen Mary Falls Cafe at the falls themselves (about 10k
west). Spring Creek has the view across the valley & is more up-market,
the Falls Cafe has a nice shady picnic area and carpark and the Falls are only
a short walk - well worth the effort. I usually go to the Falls Cafe.
